GREEN SOUTH AFRICAN CYCAD TEN DAY SPECIAL BAND SIZE SEEDLINGS This species is endemic to Msinga district in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. E. msinganus is on the verge of extinction, where ever shrinking populations are small and scattered. This is a small to medium sized plant. Leaves get about about five feet in length. Stems can reach up to three meters over the centuries, but it is rare to see anything close to that size. This species was originally called Encephalartos msinga (after its locality) but was later formally described as Encephalartos msinganus. The leaves on this species are relatively short, are green and generally are heavily armed on the leaflets and petioles. It is quite rare to see this plant in cultivation and some make the argument that it is equally rare to some of the (very rare) Transvaal species. In coastal and inland areas, this species wants to be in sun. For desert areas, this species should be grown in partial sun or filtered light. It requires a soil that drains well. The plants on sale are 4 years old, bigger and older than shown here and with about four to five leaves. Remember to mention this Blog Special for this discount at the time of purchase. |
