Jungle Music Palms and Cycads, located at 450 Ocean View Ave in Encinitas, CA, traditionally propagates and offers plants in container sizes that people can lift without heavy equipment. However, larger plants for sale do exist and some projects call for them. To help our customers who want larger plants, especially crane sized material, we work with and cooperate with several associates who grow larger specimens as a specialty. This includes everything from 30 inch boxes up to 60 inch boxes. Plants of this size require heavy equipment or a crane to move and plant.
I wanted to show you some photographs of these larger specimen plants. I think it’s one of the better offerings of larger specimens around. And, it includes large palms and cycads that you can’t usually find. These specimen palms and cycads are sold at affordable prices. If you are interested in these or other species, please feel free to contact me and I will forward you to the appropriate agent for larger palm material.
The photographs below are representative. They may or may not be specific plants we have available at any given time. But, comparable plants are usually available.
We offer the species below as well as others. Contact me if you do not see the exact species you are seeking.
Remember to call me or email me and I’ll direct you to these fabulous specimen plants.

CYCADS, RARE SPECIMEN CYCADS INCLUDING ENCEPHALARTOS, DIOONS, ZAMIA, CERATOZAMIA, MACROZAMIA, STANGERIA, CYCAS AND OTHERS.
Jungle Music Palms and Cycads, has been the leading source for rare specimen cycads for decades. We have one of the most comprehensive offerings of mature, coning sized large specimen cycads available in the United States. In general, cycads are much smaller than palm trees and most times cranes are not needed to transport. And, specimen cycads are difficult to locate, especially the rare species like large Encephalartos and Dioons. The Sago Palm is an exception to this rule, as they are more available at many nurseries. But, the rare large cycads are seldom seen. Remember that such plants are the most collectible, Jurassic, and primitive of all garden specimen plant material. Contact us if you are seeking specimens of this rare and sought after group of landscape plants.
DRACENA DRACO, THE DRAGON TREE. Below are some containerized and attractive specimens. From time to time we are offered large branching trees, but they are difficult to transport. This species is not a palm, but often appreciated by those who like palms. I’ve posted below a mature tree because many people don’t know this species or what it looks like when it gets large. It makes a good sized blue tree with many bifurcations of its branches.
DYPSIS DECARYI, THE TRIANGLE PALM, up to several feet of trunk
HOWEA FORSTERIANA, KENTIA PALM, specimens up to 20 feet of trunk, singles and multiples, up to 48 inch boxes. This is one of the ideal palms for the Coastal Southern California area. These specimens add an instant tropical look to the garden.
JUBAEA CHILENSIS, THE CHILEAN WINE PALM
Special mention should be made about this species which is a true specimen palm tree. 24 inch and 30 inch boxed plants are typically available year round. But, if you are seeking a truly spectacular specimen with good trunk size, availability is sporadic and intermittent. But, from time to time, they are offered. And, they sell quickly. Such specimen Jubaea typically are dug from a garden site and thus become available. It takes anywhere from 20 to 30 years to obtain the desired trunk height. Such specimens are the most expensive palm that you can consider on your project, but are very magnificent and the true prince of stately specimen palms. They have the thickest trunks of any palm tree, often three to four feet in diameter. Feel free to contact us if you are seeking a specimen Jubaea. They only come on the market from time to time. Pictured below are two fine specimens of Jubaea that are housed with one of our associates. The last three photos are of a spectacular specimen, still in the ground, that is presently available at an excellent price.
JUST AVAILABLE, HUGE JUBAEA CHILENSIS
This is an example of huge Chilean Wine Palms that become available from time to time. If interested, email or call me about what’s on the market right now.
JUBAEA HYBRIDS: From time to time we have hybrids of the Jubaea family. These give a quicker growing, thick trunk palm with cold hardiness.
A desirable hybrid is Jubaea X Butia. Below is an example of what appears to be a Jubaea X Butia that was recently dug and boxed.
LIVISTONA SPECIES INCLUDING DECIPIENS. These plants are hard to find but very enjoyable. Also, many are cold hardy.
MULE PALM, BUTIA X SYAGRUS ROMANZOFIANNA
This interesting hybrid doesn’t get as tall as the Queen Palm and has more cold hardiness, about to 16 degrees F. It is a good grower.
Very hard to find in these sizes in the Western U.S. Sizes available include 24 inch and 30 inch boxes (shown) and sometimes larger.
PHEONIX CANARIENSIS, THE CANARY ISLAND PALM OR CANARY PALM: Large palms of this species are offered from boxes with a few feet of trunk up to large specimen palms. These specimen palm trees are instant landscape for the garden. This species is a type of Date Palm or Phoenix Palm Tree. But, this species does not give edible dates. Their trunks are thicker than the true Date Palm.
PHOENIX DACTYLIFERA, THE TRUE DATE PALM, up to 20 feet. This is an alternative large palm tree for people who want something different than the Canary Palm Tree. The Date Palm Tree is being seen more commonly in the landscape. Nice specimens have a “knobby” trunk. The foliage has a bit of blue mixed in with the green. Sometimes certain varieties are very blue. so, if you want some Date Palm Trees, contact us.
PHOENIX RECLINATA, THE SENNEGAL DATE PALM, up to 48 inch boxes. And, on occasion, truly spectacular large specimens are offered.
PHOENIX ROEBELENII, PYGMY DATE PALM
ROYSTONEA REGIA, THE ROYAL PALM, up to 36 inch boxes. This species like heat, full sun, and tolerates temperatures down to about 25 degrees.
It gets a swollen trunk base and can get to 35 feet height or more. Large “in the ground” plants are difficult to dig and move. Therefore, boxed specimens give better results.
SAGO PALM, CYCAS REVOLUTA, up to 36 inch boxes or larger. Large branching specimens available at times. Also check out more rare and desirable cycads.
SYAGRUS ROMANZOFFIANA, THE QUEEN PALM
SYAGRUS BOTRYOPHORA, THE PATI PALM: This fairly new introduction is a type of Syagrus, related to the Queen Palm. However, there
are important differences. It has a thinner trunk and hold more leaves along the trunk (opposed to all the leaves at the top). This species is available on a seasonal basis. The second picture shows a specimen with the typical leaf pattern.
TRACHYCARPUS FORTUNEI, THE WINDMILL PALM, up to 20 feet
WODYETIA BIFURCATA, THE FOXTAIL PALM
This single trunk palm is native to Australia. It gets its name from the fact that the leaves are very fluffy (plumose) and resemble to tail of a fox.
This species prefers full sun and heat. It has a cold tolerance into the low twenties F. Right along the coast where high heat is lacking,
sometimes it has trouble and brown tips on the leaflets. It reaches a mature height of about twenty-two feet and has a think trunk. From time
to time, good sized plants are available.
I hope you enjoyed this limited presentation of photographs of larger specimen palm trees and cycads. Availability changes over time, but we will try our best to find you exactly what you want. And, more species are available than those shown above. We are able to cater to architects and landscape companies as well as homeowners. Discounts on volume purchases are available with wholesale palm tree prices available to those in the trade. Rapid delivery can be arranged and delivery anywhere in the U.S. is possible, depending on governmental agricultural restrictions. Feel free to contact me by phone or email for more information on our group’s large palm trees for sale.
