Over our 40 year existence, I’d estimate that the nursery has sold several thousand of this very popular dwarf palm. Typically we recommend putting in a small colony of them. They look great like this and will get staggered heights. Most garden plants are not over 3 to 4 feet tall. The first two rows of photos show our one gallon size on sale. The last row shows older photos of either five gallon size or one of a 30 year clumps that are mature and flowering. We’ve found this species to look best when planted as a small colony of three to five plants. A name sometimes used for this species is the “Whale Tail Palm”. This species likes shade and has simple, non-divided leaves as shown. Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F. For some reason, no seeds have been available lately, so it’s a difficult plant to find. These bands are small but all that’s around right now.
