This exotic suckering and armed fan palm is native to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippins and surrounding Asian areas. Mature height of plants typically ten to twelve feet although, in the tropics, I’ve seen taller specimens. Stems are narrow and thatched with brown fibers. Leaf stems are armed with small pointed spines. Leaves are green and markedly divided into long leaflets that have a jagged end. Leaves are rounded, flat and quite attractive. It is cold hardy down to a freeze or a bit lower. Unlike other types of Licuala, this species can tolerate partial or sometimes full coastal sun. We’re putting nice band sized seedlings on sale with about four leaves. These would be easy to mail order.
