Many folks like plants that don’t have a super thick trunk and don’t get too tall. Such is the case with this species. Ravenea glauca is native to Madagascar, has a thin six inch trunk and gets to a height of about 25 feet. One of my favorite habitat photos is shown below with the red cliffs in the background. How gorgeous is this species? It is a full sun plant in most areas and cold hardy to the upper teens to low 20’s F. The one gallon plants are a starter size. Be aware that Ravenea are a dioecious palm. You need both sexes to make seeds. As we can no longer get seeds from Madagascar, the chances for domestic seeds are slim. I predict we’ll rarely see any desirable Ravenea species available in the future. Growth rate is pretty good. It is a very durable plant and easy to grow. New growers should consider this species. Be aware we only have a few available. Mail order is easy. Just mention this Blog Only Special to get your discount. The last photo from Palmpedia is by an unknown author.
