Speaking of cold hardy, filtered light or full sun palms, let me mention Chamaedorea radicalis. Today I’m talking about the tunking form of this species. Decades ago we didn’t even know this species existed. All Chamaedorea radicalis were dwarfs – rarely over five feet tall. The trunking form rapidly puts on trunk. Mature, plants can get up to fifteen feet tall. Leaflets are wider than the dwarf form and there’s a bit of silver color to the stems and trunk. Trunks mature are narrow, under an inch thick. They can bend slightly as they get height. See photos below of a mature specimen at the nursery. It is also very quick growing. These 15g on Special should have a ten foot height in under five years. Both forms tolerate full sun along the coast but can also be grown in strong filtered light. Cold hardiness of 18 degrees F. Some in the SF Bay Area are successfully growing this species. Also, enthusiasts in Houston, TX have as well. We have a limited number of 15g plants on special. This larger 15g size can be mail ordered but do consider smaller sizes to save money if you are out of our area. Interestingly enough, the 15 gallon shown below has a taller single trunking form in the pot with a true dwarf below. Notice how the smaller plant looks totally different. Also, I am showing below a fruiting size mature 25 gallon plant at the nursery.
