This is small Mexican cycad with stems typically under one foot tall in size and leaves green in color and up to three feet long, sometimes shorter. It usually holds about five or so leaves, sometimes more. It is a variable species and leaflets can be lanceolate or wedge shaped. Leaflets are quite thin in texture and have soft spines on the margins. Overall, this species has a “fern-like” appearance and would not be considered spiny. The names “vasquezii” replaced the more commonly known name of “fischeri” in the past fifteen years or so.
The two plants shown here in the first two rows below are eight to ten years old. One is a female in cone (illustrated). Most have caudexes of 2 to 3 inches. I am also showing (last row) two super robust garden specimens.
