Caryota urens is a tall single trunk monocarpic palm species native to Asia. It is fast growing and can get to a height of 70 feet. It is definitely a canopy-forming palm species. Leaves a green and leaflets are premorse (jagged at their ends). Some people love the grandeur of these palms. Trunks are tan, ringed and about 16 inches diameter on average. It will get taller and more quickly get there than almost any other palm in your garden. They want full sun and, especially if inland, plenty of water. Because they are monocarpic (flower and then die), one needs a plant that is near death to get seeds. This occurs rarely. We were able to germinate seeds from such a plant. I’ve not had seedlings for six to eight years. They are on their first or second leaf and can be mail ordered within the U.S. easily. Seeds haven’t been available for years and this is the first time we’ve offered young plants for ten years.
