We at the nursery are very proud that we offer a good selection of these interesting New World fan palms. Coccothrinax are native to the Caribbean region. This species, C. baradensis, gets to heights of about 30 feet in many decades. Leaf color is green to silver-green and trunks are typically six inches thick or a bit more. This species loves full hot sun and is cold tolerant into the mid-twenties F. Many are growing it with good success. In pots, all Coccothrinax are painfully slow. Our plants are grown from seed which we germinate. After a 6 month wait, one gets one small green strap leaf. It takes 2 to 3 more years to get a fan-type leaf. Thus, it’s taken us about eight years to produce the 5g plants you see here. In the ground they are much faster.
