This sought after variety of Dioon edule comes from the Queretaro state in Mexico. There it lives in harsh conditions at elevations up to 5000 feet. It is a medium sized plant. Extremely old specimens may have a trunk with a 3 to 4 foot height. The striking appeal of this variety are the sometimes blue leaves. In sun this is more pronounced. I’ve seen specimens as blue as an Encephalartos horridus. Leaves are keeled and sometimes will twist. This plant can sucker. It tolerates full sun and is cold hardy down to about 20 degrees F. It’s a great plant for the garden. BTW, greenhouse grown plants are usually green because they don’t see sun directly.
