This South African cycad is perhaps best known for two things: It can grow in shady conditions and the cones (especially the female cone) are red. The cone color varies from fire engine red to orange. Female cones seem to be more colorful. The leaflets look like a holly fern. Right along the coast, this species can take almost full sun and look good. But, most people grow it in part day sun or filtered light. From a seedling, it takes about ten years in the ground to get a big, coning sized plant. Cold tolerance is into the low 20’s F. We’re offering our older band size on special. Ages of these are at least 4 years. Ideally, they should be repotted into a larger container. These are easy to ship within the U.S
