As many of you know, Encephalartos woodii is extinct in the wild. And, there is only one “mother” male plant in a botanical garden in Durbin, South Africa. Pups have been removed from that plant and, over many generations, grown well in gardens worldwide. But, there are no females. Because of this male E. woodii pollen has been used on similar cycads to make interesting hybrids. Most take on some of the characteristics of woodii.
Closest to E. woodii from a genetic point of view is Encephalartos natalensis. The first hybrid below is the cross of these two with E. natalensis being the seed bearer.
