SUPER RARE & HARD TO FIND DWARF & COLD HARDY FAN PALM
USUALLY UNDER SIX FEET TALL MATURE – BLUE TO GREEN LEAVES
Chamaerops humilis is not, by iteself, a rare palm species. But, the super small variety is hard to find and tends to cost much more than the standard form. The main items that make Vulcano different are it’s very small palmate leaves, the absence of significant spines on the leaf stems and its small mature size. For decades I’ve been aware of the diversity in appearance of Chamaerops humilis. There have always been plants in gardens that are quite tall – up to twenty feet. In contrast, there have always been super dwarf forms around. And, leaf color has been variably seen as green, blue or something in-between. By report in Northern Africa, there are indigenous varieties that are very small. About a decade ago we started to see offerings of this “vulcano” variety. Interestingly, if you Google this species, almost all websites found on this species belong to people that wish to sell the plants to you. This makes you wonder if it’s more of a promotional broadcast to sell plants as opposed to a “new species”. But, most growers do call the super small variety “Chamaedrops humilis variety vulcano“. Enough said. This variety is super cold hardy to about 15 degrees or colder. It wants full sun. The mature plant photos are c/o MG at the PalmCentre in the UK and nl.pinterest.com unknown author.
