LONG UPRIGHT LEAVES
DIFFICULT TO FIND FOR SALE
This unique and larger cycad is native to Uganda. In fact, at one point it was called the “Uganda Giant Cycad”. This is because it has leaves that extend almost straight up toward the sky and can be twelve feet long or more. Leaflets are narrow and armed with small spines. The caudex is a light color and in the wild can be up to ten feet tall. Historically, as this species is similar toE. laurentianus, it was called also “Encephalartos laurentianus Lake George“, referring to its specific habitat. The nursery plants I’m showing today are locally grown 15g plants. We have other sizes as well, both larger and smaller. The last photo shows one of our boxed specimens. Note the appearance of these plants with their long leaves with narrow leaflets. Enthusiasts love this species because it’s a good growing cycad. Right on the coast I’d give it half day sun. It’s not quite a sun-tolerant as many of the South African species. Cold tolerance is into the low 20’s F.
