CLUMPER – NOT RUNNER!
This evergreen fern is native to South Africa and only gets about one to two feet tall and three to four feet wide. A. myeri doesn’t run or take over the garden – it stays as a smaller clump. It has tight, fluffy green leaves as shown here. When I planted out my garden 40 years ago, I didn’t know the difference. I planted Asparagus Fern sprengeri. What a mistake! It takes over. But, the one shown here doesn’t run or monopolize an area. It remains a nice little clump. It’s really cute, cold hardy to 20 degrees F. and easy to grow. It likes filtered light or sun along the coast and wants average water. The 5th phot is by K.G. III and the last c/o Missouri Botanical garden. The last photo shows the “springeri” variety which you don’t want to plant.
