Among taxonomists, Dictyosperma is known as a “monotypic” genus. This means there is only one species. Older varietal names such as “rubrum” and “furfuraceum” are out. Now the taxonomist say there are three varieties of Dictyosperma album – and the prior variety called “rubrum” apparently is grouped with the aureum present type variety.
Currently there are three varieties of D. album:
Dictyosperma album variety album
Dictyosperma album variety aureum
Dictyosperma album variety conjugatum
What we’ve known as D. furfuraceum is now called D. album variety conjugatum. This is the smallest species of the group and gets to mature heights of ten to fifteen feet. It’s from Round Island. Reports are that it is critically endangered with only a few plants remaining in the wild. It has a definite white powdery color to leaf stems and to the crown shaft.
It’s near impossible to find the Dictyosperma conjugatum for sale. Previously we had some old specimens but those are long gone. We’re offering you plants in 2 gallon pots presently on special. Only a few are left for sale. The great garden photos are by Tim Rann
