This relatively recent introduction to the palm market is from Madagascar. It is a suckering palm that gets to a height of about twelve feet with 4 inch thick trunks. Leaves are green, keeled and recurved at their ends. The proximal leaf stems and the crown shaft are covered with red colored hairs. Leaflets are thin and prominently veined. It is a sun palm along the coast and has a cold hardiness below a freeze, probably into the upper twenties F. Most enthusiasts have found this palm to be a good grower. The garden specimen below is from the garden of Matt Bradford, La Mesa, CA. All photos by him. The 5 gallon plants were repotted from 1g into 5g well over 2 years ago.
