This South American species is known for the prominent dark colored spines on the trunk. It is often called the ‘Spiny Thatch Palm”. It is a fan palm with a trunk diameter of about 12 inches. Mature height is up to twenty feet. Leaves are medium size and green. It loves full sun and is cold hardy into the mid to upper teens F. Mature fruits are yellow and most trees will produce seeds.
