TRITHRINAX SCHIZOPHYLLA THE CARANDILLA PALM

BLUE-GREEN SUCKERING FAN PALM

This rare and hard to find species of South American fan palm was previously known as Trithrinax biflabellata. But, the latter was later found to be spineless and the two were given separate species status. It is native to Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. T. schizophylla is definitely a spiny palm with long needle-like spines on the trunk. It is not quite as blue as campestris and is usually a suckering palm but sometimes is single trunk. Mature height is six to fifteen feet. Although the leaf is a rigid leaf, the leaflet tips are softer than the pungent T. campestris. Leaf color is blue-green, not nearly as blue as campestris. It is a very cold hardy species that tolerates temperatures down to at least 18 degrees F. On sale are very old, outdoor grown 15g plants. I think we’ve been growing these for about 12 to 14 years. It likes full sun and loves heat. It is possible to mail order this larger 15g size but it’d take a large box.
