BECCARIOPHOENIX MADAGASCARENSIS AKA "BECCARIOPHOENIX NO-WINDOWS"

LARGER PINNATE PALM FROM MADAGASCAR

It was not too long ago when Beccariophoenix was felt to be a monotypic genus with only one species. Now it is recognized that there are three different species:

Beccariophoenix species “windows”, presently called Beccariophoenix fenestralis.
Beccriophoenix madagascarensis, previously known as “Beccariophoenix no windows“
Beccariophoenix alfredii, a more recently named species that is the number one species of this genus that we sell.

All three are single trunk, medium to large plants from Madagascar. Along the coast, all can take full sun. Estimated cold hardiness is into the mid and perhaps lower 20’s F. The species we’re putting on special is a 20 gallon specimen of the “No-Windows” variety, B. madagascarensis. You’ll not see these around hardly at all in Southern California. This plant is older and in the pinnate stage of it’s development. Contrast this with the “windows” form (fenestralis) which has small leaf openings, similar to small window panes, in the leaf – between the leaflets. With time these disappear and it becomes a pinnate palm. The 20 gallon on special is very nicely sized and at least 12 years old. It is too heavy for standard UPS shipping.
