OFTEN GROWN AS A “MULTIPLE”
This single trunk pinnate palm is native to areas extending from southern Mexico down to Columbia. They are often grown for food as the male blossoms are cooked and eaten as a delicacy. This species doesn’t take sun here – it’ll burn. But, in shade it thrives in temperatures down to the mid-twenties F. It is quick growing and has a rather thick, prominently ringed dark green trunk. Flowers are quite prominent and, if you have several plants closely situated, the chances are you’ll obtain fruit without even trying. The last photo shows a flower with green fruit. This species can also be grown inside the home as long as the air is not too hot and dry. I personally like the looks of a collection of several plants grown together. Over time, as they age and get overhead, there will be some “stair-stepping” of the crowns and this is quite attractive. Cold tolerance is into the mid-twenties F. It needs shade or filtered light, even when tall. We have singles of this species if you only want a single plant. The seventh photo below is c/o TS at RPS.
