Encephalartos trispinosus is a very desirable blue South African cycad. Most people find it’s very similar to E. horridus. It is a small to medium sized mature blue cycad with leaflets that have prominent lobes. The color, if grown in full hot sun, is a prominent blue to silver leaf color. But, be aware that this species is quite variable and has many forms. There is even a spineless leaflet form. It likes full sun and is cold hardy to about 22 degrees F. Mature size is small to medium with a thirty year old plant only being six or seven feet tall with an 18 inch trunk. The plant on Special today is a sun-ready, outdoor grown coning sized plant that has a caudex of 8 inches with two pups – one 6 inches, the other 4 inches. It’s leaflets are prominently spined and the color is blue. This plant is way too large and heavy for standard mail order.
