Encephalartos arenarius is from the coastal dunes and forest close to Alexandria in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. This species is medium in mature size. Leaf length can range from one to two meters (i.e. three to six feet approximately) depending on cultivar and exposure to sun. With an older mature specimen you’ll often find three to five feet of trunk and and overall height of six to ten feet. Like many of the Encephalartos from the Eastern Cape, this species is variable in color, size and leaf type. E. arenarius can range in color from a dull green to a powdery white color (bearing a likeness to E. horridus). The plants of this species are both blue and green forms, but this plant below most likely the green variety. In sun, it may show some blue color. It prefers a well draining soil. Speed of growth of this cycad is good. The plant shown here is in a 15 gallon container. Caudex size is 3.5 inches. This plant can be mail ordered if needed. If this plant sells, we do have other 15g of similar size at the same End of Summer Sale discount.
