THE REGULAR KING PALM – ARE SIX OTHER VARIETIES, MORE RARE
MEDIUM TO TALL, FULL OR PART DAY SUN – MULTIPLES OR SINGLES
The popular King Palm is also known as the Piccabeen Palm or Bangalow palm. It is native to several areas in Australia. It can in habitat get to sixty feet tall, but in Southern California is usually not over 40 feet tall. It is crown shafted with a gray trunk. The crown shaft is green with some brown speckled areas. Leaf length is 8 to 10 feet. It is not particularly rare. Other species of King Palms are. (we grow them all). Ramenta is present on the back of the leaflets, a hallmark of this species. Cold tolerance is about 25 degrees F. Be aware that there are at least six other varieties of more rare King Palms that look different – and we carry all of them. In terms of light, along the coast full or part sun is fine but if you are far inland, I’d recommend only several hours of early or late-day sun. If you only have full sun, consider the “teracarpa” variety. This variety doesn’t brown tip on the leaflets like the regular King Palm.
