BIZARRE AND SWOLLEN BASE
MEDIUM SIZED MATURE – LOVES SUN
This is a popular succulent plant that is certainly not a true palm. Yet, all of its common names call it one. Native to Mexico, this plant typically gets ten to fifteen feet tall with a peculiar, expanded caudex at the base and a crown of strap like leaves. These emerge upward and then hang down in a fountain fashion. The most amazing thing about this species is the bizarre forms it can take on. It can have multiple heads of leaves, multiple emerging trunks from the caudex base and the size of the base can get massive. I’ve seen photos of small cars parked on top of the base of this species. It is a sun loving species and cold hardy somewhere into the mid-twenties F. Cold may damage the leaves but usually plants come back the following season.
