Alocasia sumo is a hybrid species – a cross between A. portora and “purple cloak“. The cold hardiness comes from the portora parentage. This is a medium sized hybrid with 3 to 4 foot long leaves that are diamond shaped with a purple hue to the underside of the leaves. Leaves are a lesser purple-green and point upwards. There are prominent veins on the leaves.
Plant height should be about 6 to 8 feet. It is reported that this species is a “7b” zone species which means it should tolerate a freeze. Obviously, it’d look best in summer. We’d recommend filtered light or limited sun. The juvenile plants on sale are in one gallon pots. They are being grown in an un-heated greenhouse.
These can be shipped by mail order but would require a large shipping box. I’m showing the 15g size through below. I don’t have a garden picture. |
