This is one of the most popular Fishtail Palms because of it’s beautiful full leaves. It has leaf lengths up to 14 feet with similar widths and definitely produces shade. It is quick growing and has a thick trunk, especially at the base. So, it needs plenty of room. It wants full sun and is cold hardy to the low 20’s F. Like all Fishtail Palms, it is monocarpic – and dies when it flowers and finishes its seeding process. This palm is rather hard to find with size nowadays. A side note is that one taxonomist feels it should be called “Caryota obtusa“, a species from India.
